Why format still matters
Every image format is a set of trade-offs, and the wrong one shows up as a practical problem: the upload that gets rejected, the email attachment that is inexplicably 8 MB, the logo with a white box around it where transparency used to be. Converting is trivial — the useful knowledge is which format each job wants.
JPG is for photographs. It compresses smooth gradients — skies, skin, shadows — brilliantly, and every device and service on earth accepts it.PNG is for graphics: screenshots, charts, logos, anything with hard edges or text, and anything needing transparency. WebP does both jobs about 30% smaller and is understood by every modern browser; the only reason to avoid it is a specific older tool that rejects it.
The transparency detail
The one conversion that changes a picture's appearance is anything-to-JPG when the source has transparent areas. JPG cannot represent transparency, so those pixels have to become some colour. This tool fills them with white — the choice that looks right on documents and web pages — rather than the black that a naive conversion produces. If the transparency itself matters, convert to WebP or stay with PNG.
Quality: what the slider really does
For JPG and WebP, the quality setting decides how much smoothing the encoder may apply in places you are unlikely to notice. At 85% almost nothing visible happens and files shrink dramatically; at 50% fine texture starts to blur; below 40% edges grow halos. The live size readout lets you watch the trade instead of guessing — drop the slider until the size is right, then check the download looks fine.

Questions people ask
How do I convert PNG to JPG?
Choose the PNG, tap JPG, download. One thing to know: JPG has no transparency, so any see-through areas are filled with white rather than turning black or staying transparent. If you need the transparency kept, WebP supports it and is still smaller than PNG.
How do I convert WebP to JPG?
The same way — choose the WebP file and pick JPG. This is the most common request, usually because an older app or a printing service refuses WebP. The conversion is instant and the quality slider lets you keep the file small.
Will converting lose quality?
Converting to PNG never loses anything — it is lossless. Converting to JPG or WebP re-encodes the image at the quality you set; at 85% or above the difference is invisible at normal viewing size. Converting a JPG to PNG does not recover quality the JPG already gave up — it just makes a faithful, larger copy.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG stores photographs pixel-perfectly, and photographs have millions of subtly different pixels, so there is little for it to squeeze. That is normal. PNG earns its size on screenshots, diagrams and logos, where its perfect edges matter and its compression works well.
Can I convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?
Only in Safari, which is the one browser that decodes HEIC. Elsewhere you will get a clear message that the file could not be read. On the iPhone itself, Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible makes the camera save JPG directly.
Is my photo uploaded to convert it?
No. The conversion happens on your device and the picture is never sent anywhere — which is why there is no upload bar and no waiting, and why it works offline once the page has loaded.
