Where the megabytes go
A modern phone saves photos at 12 to 48 megapixels and 3–8 MB each — sized for printing posters, not for sending or uploading. Most of those bytes describe detail no screen will ever show. Compression re-encodes the picture keeping what eyes notice and discarding what they do not, which is why a 4 MB photo routinely becomes 400 KB with no visible change.
The slider controls that trade directly, and the live readout shows the price of each step. There is no single right answer: a photo for a listing can afford 65%, a portfolio piece wants 90%. The point of seeing before and after is that you decide with the numbers in front of you.
Compress, resize, or both?
Quality is only half the size equation — the other half is pixels. File size scales with pixel count, so a 4000-pixel-wide photo shown in an 800-pixel spot is paying five times the bytes for nothing. The order that wins: resize down to the dimensions the destination will actually display, then compress. Together they routinely take a photo from 5 MB to under 150 KB.
An honest optimizer
Some pictures are already as small as they usefully get — files that came through WhatsApp, images from a website, anything previously optimised. Re-encoding those makes them slightly worse and sometimes larger. When that happens this tool tells you plainly and suggests keeping the original, rather than delivering a "compressed" file that is a downgrade. An optimizer you cannot trust to say "no gain here" is not optimising, it is just re-saving.

Questions people ask
How do I get a photo under 2 MB for an upload form?
Choose it here and read the After figure — at the default quality almost any phone photo lands well under 2 MB. If it is still too big, lower the slider or tick WebP. For enormous images, resizing the pixels first (there is a resizer one tool over) shrinks the file far more than quality alone.
How much smaller will my photo get?
Typical phone photos compress by 60–90% depending on how much smooth detail they contain and how aggressively the phone already compressed them. Screenshots and graphics compress less predictably — they are often better served by PNG or by resizing.
Will people see the difference?
At 75–85% quality, almost never at normal viewing sizes. Compression artefacts appear first in flat gradients like skies and in fine repeated texture like hair. If a picture will be examined closely or printed large, stay at 85% or above — the savings are still substantial.
Why did the tool say my file got bigger?
Because it was already tightly optimised — often a photo that has been through another compressor or a messaging app. Re-encoding cannot find savings that are not there, and pretending otherwise would just hand you a worse file. The tool says so and recommends keeping the original.
Should I use the WebP option?
If the destination accepts it, yes — WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at matching quality, and every modern browser displays it. Skip it only for older software or services that explicitly want JPG.
Is my photo uploaded to be compressed?
