Five hundred years of dummy text
Lorem ipsum predates the computer by centuries: typesetters used the scrambled Cicero passage to show type specimens where the letterforms, not the words, were the product. Digital design inherited it for the same reason — a layout under review should be judged as a layout, and the fastest way to stop people reading the content is for the content to be elegant nonsense in Latin. It signals "unfinished" unambiguously, which real-looking text never does.
Filler as a testing tool
Placeholder text earns its keep when it stresses the design. Generate the long version of everything: the two-line name in the space sized for one, the paragraph that overflows the card. Text that arrives later is always longer than the text the mock-up was built with — translations run 20–30% longer than English, and someone's product name will be *Extraordinarily* long. Filling generously today is cheaper than a layout bug filed after launch, and a generator that produces any amount on demand makes generous filling free.
Runs entirely on your device, offline included.
Questions people ask
What does lorem ipsum actually mean?
Nothing readable — and that is its entire job. It is scrambled fragments of Cicero's De Finibus (45 BC), garbled precisely enough that nobody stops to read it. Meaningful placeholder text pulls attention to its content; lorem ipsum lets people judge the layout instead.
Why not just use real text as filler?
Because stakeholders read it. Put a news paragraph in a mock-up and the review meeting discusses the news. Lorem ipsum looks like language — realistic word lengths, sentence rhythm, punctuation — while saying nothing to react to, which is why it has survived since the age of metal type.
How much text does a mock-up need?
Working figures: a headline is 5–10 words, a card description 15–25, an intro paragraph 40–60, an article 4–8 paragraphs. Generating slightly more than you think reveals overflow problems early — the layout that only worked with short text is a classic launch-day surprise.
Is this the exact traditional passage?
The opening line is the canonical one. Beyond it, sentences are generated fresh from the traditional vocabulary, so lengths vary naturally and repeated generations differ — closer to how real copy behaves than a fixed passage repeated verbatim.
Any risk of shipping it by accident?
Famously, yes — lorem ipsum has reached production on banks and governments. The defence is a pre-launch search for 'lorem' and 'ipsum' across the site; two words, thirty seconds, endless embarrassment saved.
Is anything stored?
No — generation happens on your device and nothing persists.
